Performance review season is upon us. We use this time to reflect on accomplishments (success/failures) and work from the past year. While we use these to look back and reflect, these reviews are a great time to also look forward toward where we want our careers to go. A portion of the review focuses on “Growth and Development.” Some of us have a plan in place and direction they want to go. Others, may have an idea, but struggle to getting things started. Regardless of where you fall in that spectrum, there is a one action we encourage you to do - talk about it with your manager. Why? Consider these:
- Does your manager know where you would like go in your career? Are they aware of skills you would like to work on or new areas that you would like to explore and could use some support on achieving?
- Are there things that can be done in your work life to allow the time or opportunities to improve your skills or learning something new?
- Are there tools or resources available in the organization that could help you?
By talking, you and your manager can find opportunities and solutions to meet both personal and organizational goals. Since the conversation involves your manager, the Professional Development Team decided to facilitate a discussion on professional development (PD) of MSIS staff with the management team.
On Friday May 15th, the Management Forum discussed how MSIS approaches PD. During the forum, managers discussed their own professional development goals with each other and role played several scenarios where they discussed different approaches and challenges they/we face. In addition, John Brussolo, Chris Chapman, and Jack Kufahl presented their perspective on PD and how they incorporate it in their units. All the activities sparked great discussion and highlighted many ways we can work towards supporting everyone in MSIS with PD opportunities.
So before you fill out your performance evaluation, start that conversation and keep having it on a regular basis!
